About the Association

The UK Flavour Association represents the interests of the flavouring manufacturing industry in the UK.

It is the leading organisation dealing with the legislative and technical needs of the industry and is active in Europe through its membership of the European Flavour Association (EFFA).

EFFA, in turn, is a member of the International Organisation of the Flavouring Industry (IOFI), which represents the industry on a global basis.

The UK Flavour Association was formed in 1917 as the British Essence Manufacturers’ Association, changing our name in 2012 to reflect the wider membership that now plays a role in the Association. The Association currently represents 44 UK and Ireland-based company Members, both manufacturers as well as specialist industry suppliers (e.g. bespoke software) and consultants to the industry. All share a need to keep up to date with regulatory change and understand how this is being implemented.

The Constitutional objectives of the Association are:

  • To proactively promote and protect the interest of its Members.
  • To encourage Members to maintain high standards in the conduct of their business dealings and to adhere to the EFFA and IOFI Codes of Practice.
  • To represent the interests of Members both within the UK and internationally.
  • To provide coordination on regulatory, safety, technical and scientific issues.
  • To provide a forum for Members to raise concerns and resolve issues related to the industry.

A tasty mix of national and international companies

The UK Flavour Association membership is a mix of national and international companies and is run by an elected Executive Committee which gives strategic guidance and a Technical Committee – open to all – which discusses and disseminates complex legislation, both from the EU and within GB, ensuring Members understand where there are differences. Ever dynamic, sub-committees and working groups are frequently formed where there is a need for a short-term focus. Association Members are also welcome to participate in a Sustainability Committee, held jointly with the fragrance industry as the two industries share similar challenges and ingredients in the supply chain.

As ingredient manufacturers, our Members are mostly B2B. The following flowchart shows how they fit into the wider food supply chain:

Celebrate in style

In 2017, the Association celebrated its centenary with a glittering gala dinner at Church House in London as part of London Flavour Day.

Guests including leading flavour companies, Food & Drink Federation (FDF) representatives and a European delegation from the European Flavour Association (EFFA) gathered to reflect on a century of British flavour innovation and to look forward to what the future might hold for the industry.
