Variety is the spice of life and flavourings help to bring that variety to consumers in a safe, accessible and affordable way.
The UK Flavour Association represents the interests of the flavouring industry in the UK. It is the leading organisation dealing with the legislative and technical needs of the industry and is active in Europe through its membership of the European Flavour Association (EFFA).
EFFA is a member of the International Organisation of the Flavouring Industry (IOFI), which represents the industry on a global basis.
The UK Flavour Association was formed in 1917 as the British Essence Manufacturers’ Association, changing our name in 2012 to reflect the wider membership that now plays a role in the Association. The Association currently represents 40 UK and Ireland-based company members. It acts as the key technical representative forum for flavour and flavour related manufacturers, with some associate members made up of consultants, specialist suppliers (e.g. bespoke software) and others.
The UK Flavour Association has a mix of national and international companies and operates mainly through a technical committee that meets regularly to discuss and disseminate complex, largely EU sourced regulation. Key direct relationships are maintained with DEFRA, which has specialist flavour resource, and the FSA, as well as a variety of other technically-based organisations such as SEDEX and QADEX.
In 2017, the Association celebrated its centenary with a glittering gala dinner at Church House in London as part of London Flavour Day. Guests including leading flavour companies, Food & Drink Federation (FDF) representatives and a European delegation from the European Flavour Association (EFFA) gathered to reflect on a century of British flavour innovation and to look forward to what the future might hold for the industry. You can read more about it and see the photos here.
The objectives of the Association are:
- To proactively promote and protect the interest of its members.
- To encourage members to maintain high standards in the conduct of their business dealings and to adhere to the EFFA and IOFI Codes of Practice.
- To represent the interests of members both within the UK and internationally.
- To provide coordination on regulatory, safety, technical and scientific issues.
- To provide a forum for members to raise concerns and resolve issues related to the industry.
