Production Chemist – making aroma chemicals at scale
Production Chemists are the hands-on scientists behind the manufacture of the aroma chemicals and flavour ingredients used all around us. Their work is essential to transforming laboratory recipes and chemical processes into consistent, high-quality products that food and drink manufacturers rely on.
What does a Production Chemist do?
Production Chemists use their chemistry knowledge to carry out, monitor and refine chemical reactions on a manufacturing scale. This includes:
- Setting up and running reactions to produce flavour precursors and aroma chemicals, often handling reagents that require careful control and specialised procedures.
- Handling sensitive chemicals and working safely with air- and moisture-sensitive reagents, such as lithium aluminium hydride and butyl lithium, with appropriate laboratory technique.
- Managing gas-phase processes where certain reactions involve controlled introduction of gases for synthesis.
- Monitoring progress and quality using analytical tools such as gas chromatography (GC) to check how reactions are progressing and make adjustments as needed.
- Purification and finishing. After reactions are complete, products are worked up and purified, often by distillation at atmospheric or reduced pressure to meet strict specifications.
- Product approval and recording, ensuring products meet odour, composition and other quality standards and entering finished materials into inventory for use in orders or further processing.
This role is hands-on, lab-based and requires careful attention to detail, safety and process consistency.

Career pathway
Entry into production chemistry usually starts with a chemistry degree or equivalent technical training. Many companies provide structured training to help graduates build competence in industrial synthesis and production processes. As Production Chemists gain experience they can progress into:
- Senior Production Chemist – taking on more complex processes, optimisation and project leadership.
- Production Team Lead / Lab Manager – overseeing other chemists and coordinating laboratory activities.
- Cross-functional roles such as process development, quality assurance or regulatory support.
Production Chemistry is a key contributor to the flavour supply chain, ensuring technologies and techniques developed in research labs are realised reliably and at scale for use around the world.
Skills and qualities that help
Production Chemists typically have:
- A degree in Chemistry, Chemical Engineering or a related scientific subject, with a strong grounding in practical laboratory work.
- Good problem-solving skills and the ability to interpret analytical data.
- A meticulous approach to safety, procedure and documentation.
- An interest in industrial-scale chemistry, taking reactions from the bench into production.
- Strong teamwork and communication skills to work effectively across functions.
